OCR define Photography as the practice of creating durable static or moving images by recording light with light-sensitive materials such as photographic film or digitally by means of an image sensor. Students will explore, acquire and develop skills, knowledge and understanding through the application of traditional and digital techniques and processes specific to their chosen area(s) of study of Photography. In addition, students will explore practical and relevant critical and contextual sources such as the work of historical and contemporary photographers and the different purposes, intentions and functions of photography as appropriate to their own work.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

Students are required to study one or more area(s) throughout their course:

  • Documentary photography

  • Photo-journalism

  • Studio photography

  • Location photography

  • Experimental imagery

  • Installation

  • Moving image: film, video and animation

Students will be introduced to a number of skills and techniques which they will apply to their work in a thematic approach. Projects cover all assessment objectives AO1 Develop, AO2 Experiment, AO3 Record and AO4 Present.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The staff in the department have a number of years’ experience teaching all aspects of art, craft and design disciplines. The Art department is fully equipped with a wide range of materials and resources, which allows our students to develop a broad range of skills using a variety of industry standard techniques. 

HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED

Non-Exam Assessment 60% Exam 40% Components of the coursework will be assessed on completion.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

There are many things you can go on to do after taking a GCSE in Photography. These include Art, advertising, marketing, graphic design, print design, fashion design, architecture, fashion styling, publishing, teaching, the media, portrait photographer, wedding photographer, videographer or film-maker.
