Biology

Biology is a demanding, yet intellectually fascinating subject that allows students to recognise the direct relevance of the subject to many aspects of their lives from a molecular level to human impacts upon ecosystems.

In both the GCSE and A level Biology courses, you will study the main principles of Biology. Biology encompasses the study of life from the molecular level, through cells, tissues, and organisms, to populations and ecosystems. Students will develop vital skills of problem solving, analysis, evaluation, and dexterity, as well as confidence in communicating scientific data and ideas in a variety of formats.

Students learn through a variety of approaches and styles. Theoretical concepts are taught through data analysis, lecturing, group-based tasks, student presentations, problem solving and independent study. Investigative skills are developed in four main areas. These are qualitative, quantitative, manipulative and evaluative.

Teaching staff are well qualified and have a wide range of teaching experience and differing approaches. Extensive out of lesson support is offered to students in the form of registration interventions, after school interventions and skill seminars.

Year on year the Biology department performs very well in exams with a number of students achieving the top grades both at GCSE and A level. Many of our GCSE students stay on into sixth form indicating our strength as a department. A level students in Biology have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Marine biology and others.
