WHAT YOU STUDY
On this course you will study the main principles of Biology. Biology encompasses the study of life from the molecular level, through cells, tissues and organisms, to populations and ecosystems. Students will develop vital skills of problem solving, analysis, evaluation and dexterity, as well as confidence in communicating scientific data and ideas in a variety of formats.
HOW YOU STUDY
Students learn through a variety of approaches and styles. Theoretical concepts are taught through data analysis, lecturing, group based tasks, student presentations, problem solving and independent study. Investigative skills are developed in four main areas. These are qualitative, quantitative, manipulative and evaluative.
DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES
Teaching staff are well qualified and have a wide range of teaching experience and differing approaches. Extensive out of lesson support is offered to students. Three registration intervention sessions run per week for A-level students. We have good links with the University of Wolverhampton.
PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS
Students who have studied A-level Biology can progress to Higher Education courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Teaching, Pharmacy, Biology, Environmental Studies, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences.
OUR SUCCESSES
Students make good progress and have achieved 100% pass rate on Advanced Level Biology since 2011. In seven out of the last nine years some students have achieved the highest grade A*. Students who were taught within the Biology Department have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biology and Medical Physics.
