A group of Highfields students were recently honored at the prestigious EDT (Engineering Development Trust) Awards held at the University of Birmingham. These talented individuals showcased their exceptional work on challenging projects in collaboration with esteemed companies, Ansaldo Nuclear and Mott MacDonald Bentley, throughout the academic year.
Divided into teams, the students were given unique briefs to tackle. One group focused on designing a mechanism capable of safely lifting a plate under radioactive conditions, while another sought to enhance tertiary water treatment through innovative sand filtration methods.
Meeting diligently every Tuesday after school, the teams worked closely with mentors from the partner companies, progressing from the initial design phase to building functional models. To further enhance their skills, the students embarked on an inspiring overnight trip to Loughborough University. There, they had the opportunity to utilize advanced equipment and facilities in computer labs, engineering labs, and workshops.
After months of dedication and hard work, the students confidently presented their findings to a panel of industry experts in an online session. Their exceptional presentation skills, well-executed models and experiments, and comprehensive reports received resoundingly positive feedback from the panel.
Highfields School takes immense pride in the accomplishments of these students, who have demonstrated remarkable creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities throughout the EDT project. Their success serves as a testament to the school's commitment to fostering excellence and nurturing talent in the field of engineering.
